Today the WWE released 2 fairly well known employees. They were superstars by any stretch but were good workers and usually didn't ruffle any feathers.
Shane "Hurricane" Helms received his marching orders today and was released from his WWE contract. "WWE has come to terms on the release of WWE Superstar Shane Helms (Hurricane) as of today February 26, 2010. We wish Shane Helms (Hurricane) the best in all future endeavors," read the straight-to- the point usual WWE.COM announcement. Helms has been a member of the WWE roster since 2001 when his contract was migrated from WCW along with the sale of the company. During his career in WWE, he won the European title, the Cruiserweight title twice, the WWE and World Tag Team titles twice and the Hardcore title.
Helms was in the news for all the wrong reasons last month when he and Jericho were arrested in Kentucky for public intoxication following a fight in a taxi cab where Helms ended up punching Jericho and elbowing a female passenger. One was crowned World champion last week while the rather unfortunate Helms got the pink slip.
It wasn't just Hurricane Helms who got booted out of WWE today as WWE.COM also announced the departure of Paul Burchill from the company. Burchill made his WWE debut in August 2005 and was teamed up with fellow Englishman William Regal. He was later teamed up with another Brit, Katie Lea who played his on-screen sister. Burchill, along with Lea were, sent to ECW in December 2008 and stayed there till the brand folded. Burchill was "fired" during an ECW storyline with the Hurricane but then returned sporting a mask asking for a WWE contract. The Hurricane and Burchill, under the name The Ripper, wrestled for one last time in December where Hurricane unmasked him, keeping him off the ECW brand.
WWE Diva Maria was
unexpectedly let go from the company as well, joining Helms and Burchill on
the unemployed list. On her Twitter account, Maria said that she did not ask
for her release and she only found out an hour before posting the message,
adding the release came with no warning. "...I am sad about never getting
the Championship. I am sad about not getting the chance to go to WrestleMania again," she wrote. She was, however, optimistic about the future. "There is a bright new future when one door closes another opens! Bring on the Doors! Spanks and Kisses." Maria joined WWE in 2004 when she was part of the Diva Search contest. Despite not winning the competition she was signed to a deal and made her debut in November of the same year. Last December she was voted the Diva Of The Year by the WWE fans during the Slammy Awards three hour RAW. She will be on television again next month as she is one of the cast of the Celebrity Apprentice, a show which was taped last year.
