"Whipper" Billy Watson


Today in 1990 - Toronto mainstay Whipper Billy Watson dies of a heart attack in Orlando, Florida. Watson won several titles in Maple Leaf Wrestling as well as other promotions across Canada. He was one of the most popular wrestlers in the Toronto history. Watson had a eight-month reign as NWA World Heavyweight Champion in 1956, after he ended Lou Thesz's over six-year run with the title in Toronto on March 15. He lost the title back to Thesz on November 9 in St. Louis. Watson also was a promoter in Seattle, Washington, as he was one of a few wrestlers to also hold NWA membership. Watson was 74 years old.
