1989 - Michael Hayes Wins US Title

WrestleWar - Music City Showdown



Michael Hayes (with a little help from Freebird brother Terry Gordy) wins the NWA United States Heavyweight Title by pinning Lex Luger in 16mins 6secs.  

Hayes would hold the belt for 15 days then lose the belt back to Luger in a rematch at a house show in Bluefield, West Virginia.

Today in WCW History (March 17th)


March 17th 1993

Big Van Vader defeats Sting to regain the WCW World Heavyweight Title in Dublin, Ireland.

Sting had won the title on March 11th in London England.  It was Sting's 2nd world title reign and Vader would start his 3rd and last reign as WCW World Heavyweight champion.  Vader held the title for 285 days until December 27th 1993.

Whipper Billy Watson defeated Lou Thesz to win the World Heavyweight Championship (Original version) & the NWA World Heavyweight Championship. 
Watson held the World championship for 239 days and this was his only NWA World title reign.  He lost the title back to Thesz in St. Louis MO on November 9th 1956
